Reflection of this Experience
I really enjoyed this experience, I believe that it will be beneficial for my future as an educator. Although this semester didn't end the way I anticipated, I believe that I learned a lot in a short amount of time. I was very nervous walking into my first day of tutoring, I felt like I was going to forget something, or I wouldn't be able to help her in a way that will impact her. My student really helped me through this experience with her positive attitude and her willingnesss to participate. My student taught me a lot, and showed me that students struggle to understand material and they just need extra one on one help. My student was very bright and so smart, she blew me away and surpassed my expectations. When I was completeing the intitial Informal Reading Inventory, I was trying hard to focus on what she was struggling with. She excelled in reading and comprehending what she read, and she was also great at sounding out her words. I noticed that she struggled with listening comprehension, so I really wanted to touch on that in my lessons. I had her do many reflections on the passages, and provided her questions that she needed to answer, and I noticed that I was unable to maintain her focus while she is reading. I worked with her to maintain her focus, I asked her why she was unable to stay focused, she replied saying that she has a hard time focusing in open spaces with noises, and she even said that she is uninterested with the material in the classroom. She begins thinking of other things aside from what she should be focused on. I wanted to make sure that what I was noticing in our sessions, is what her teachers are having issues with her in the classroom. As I was talking with her teacher about her inability to comprehend, her teacher noticed the same exact issue. I felt relieved that I was able to identify what she was struggling with, it gave me confidence. Although I was not able to finish my tutoring sessions with my student, I believe that we would eventually improver her listeningcomprehension.
